MAC OS X Dashboard Widgets

Why can’t you just have them on all the time? You can! Do this in a terminal window: ‘defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES’. Then log out, log in, go to dashboard, and drag around the one you want on your desktop. While still holding down the mouse button, hit f12 to hide the dashboard. viola.

R2-D2

Hasbro R2-D2 ToyI realize this toy has been out for a long time, and when I got it from my wife for Christmas or a birthday several years ago, I was really taken with it. Now that my son has gotten into Star Wars, we got it back out and I figured it was worth a blog.

I take this toy as a good sign. I love to see technology advance to the point that it’s really no big deal to see it in a toy. Just the voice command recognition portion of this guy is great. The command vocabulary is pretty extensive given the fact that it is a $99 toy, and it’s ability to create complex compound commands is pretty neat too. Sort of like a language instead of a single command kind of thing. I got some of the following easter eggs myself, but some of them I got from other places on the net. Here’s a list of things he’ll do outside of his instruction book:

1) Follow Me – R2 has a companion mode where if you tell him to follow you, he will use his sound, sonar and infrared sensors to track you. If you move too quickly he’ll lose you.

2) Come here – R2 will try to find you. The TV and other heat sources will confuse him though.

3) Ask him to remember Darth Vader, then Anakin

4) Ask him to remember Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo

5) “reset system” “behave yourself” “speak up” “Speak Up” “speak up”

6) “reset” tap on head 3 times “game mode” “dance program”

Someone said someplace to tap using the closed end of a pin. You need a sharp “tic” sound on his head in order to get a response. Don’t hit him hard at all. Just a sharp sound is all you need.

Anyway, if you’ve never played with one of these, it’s probably worth it for a true Star Wars fan.
